About the authors Lisa White RN
and Michael White LNHA, LALD

Lisa and Michael White have been involved in the medical profession for a combined 60 plus years. Lisa is a registered nurse and Michael a licensed nursing home administrator and an assisted living director. We have four wonderful children and one grandchild that we love spending time with. They have made us very proud parents.

Lisa and Michael have witnessed firsthand throughout their medical careers why it is so important to keep accurate records of personal and health-related information. In the event of an injury, illness or through the aging process, loved ones will be so relieved that you have planned accordingly.  Our motto is “Don’t wait till it’s too late” to begin planning.

We have authored this interactive workbook named “Family Conversations We Must Have but Do Not Want To” because we want to help families discern what information is truly relevant when our life or health conditions change. The series of questions that this workbook addresses are the same questions that we were faced with when a family member had lost her cognitive ability. We realize that these are hard questions, but the reality of needing this information will inevitably affect us all at some point in time. We hope that you find value in this interactive workbook and that it helps paint a clearer picture of you or your loved one’s wishes for their care.

A Personal Experience that changed our lives

In 2018, we experienced a family tragedy that helped guide us in writing this interactive workbook. Like many, we were unprepared for what happened to our mother. At 80 years-old, she was to enter the hospital for an outpatient procedure, during the cardiac procedure there was an unfortunate event that occurred, leaving her in the Intensive care unit for one month with limited cognitive ability. During the following months, we were left trying to manage her affairs for her, but only if we would have had the conversations that most of us do not want to have, and we were caught spending months and years trying to determine what our mother wanted for her care, and where were all of those important documents that we needed and were asked for, had we had this conversation with her prior, it would have made our lives and our understanding of her wishes much easier and clearer for us and relieved hours of searching and stress for the family.

This interactive workbook helps to guide you through the tough questions that we all must face at sometime in our lives or a loved one’s life, so please take the time and discuss the answers in this interactive workbook.

Family Conversations” is a book that belongs in every household. There are not many things we control in life, this, however, is something we can control, what WE want in the event something happens. This book will be invaluable in the event you are unable to speak for yourself. I recommend this to my patients on a daily basis and see the outcomes of not being prepared for the unknown. Not only will you and your loved ones be prepared, but it will remove guilt and take the burden off of family members when asked about these difficult conversations. A wonderful book you actually write yourself.

Dr. Austin DO, Hospitalist

“My experience is being a primary care physician for over 40 years. I have shared and guided life experiences, and events for thousands of people. Each stage of life has questions and decisions needed to allow a person to best direct the path of their one precious life. The most difficult questions are those that are choosing the desired path of late stages of life. These questions are not asked often enough and seldom are answered. They are difficult.
This workbook makes this difficult task, clear and achievable. It empowers the user to choose their best desired path. It offers a tool to provide needed quality to a difficult stage of life. “

My husband and I loved this interactive workbook. This book makes it so easy and organizes all the necessary information needed to plan for our future in case of a life event or change. As a couple we feel good knowing that our wishes and financials information are documented so that burden is lifted off our children and broader family!
